Responding to gaza bombing

Question I got:
Hello Rabbi Ginsburg,
Is there anything someone 13,000kms away from Israel can do to help in these troubled times? On the Chabad website I found the Psalms for times of Distress 20, 23, 69 and 150, but I wondered whether you could advise me of anything further, either through religious practice or in a more practical sense that I could do?

Answer: I remember as an 11 year old at Orthodox Day school in late May 1967 listening to Nassar of Egypt say for a week on the radio the Arab world would drive Israel into the sea. I asked if we should pray and the Orthodox rabbi said that would be fine, but especially pray that Israel fought well. 


1.Use your social media to defend Israel. 
a. Israel does not want to control Gaza. They unilaterally 100% abandoned Gaza. The only control is Israel tried to keep heavy weapons out of Gaza from terrorists but has failed since they have 12,000 missiles. They officially want Israel destroyed and Jews killed everywhere.
b. Gaza elected a terrorist group to govern itself and they terrorize the citizens. 
3. Gazans live in relative luxury compared to their Arab neighbors. http://luxurygaza.blogspot.com/
c. Gazans have sent thousands of missiles aimed at civilians in Israel, and they send them from civilian centers in Gaza, hoping Israel strikes back and hurts civilians
d. Israel just wants to love in peace, protect its citizens and let Gaza and all other Arabs etc live in peace and prosperity. Most of Israel neighbors teach their population to hate Jews and Israel and openly state they want Israel destroyed.
e. Hamas fakes footage of civilian casualties.

2. If there is a war and Israel needs volunteers, we will publicize how to help.

STANDWITHUS STATEMENT ON “PILLAR OF DEFENSE” OPERATION


The Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas and its allies have once again forced Israel to take action to defend its citizens. Since Saturday night, November 10, 2012, Palestinian combatants in Gaza have fired 120 rockets at Israeli communities, shutting down normal life, as schools and other facilities were closed and one million Israelis were advised to stay home or seek safety in bomb shelters. In response, Israel has mounted Operation “Pillar of Defense,” to deliver precise, surgical attacks on terrorist commanders and on the launching sites of Hamas’ longer range missiles which can reach into the heart of Israel's cities. 

Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of Israel who have struggled this year with the trauma of over 900 Palestinian missile and mortar attacks, as well as our extended StandWithUs family and Israeli Fellows who live in the South and who are being called up to defend their country. We fervently pray for their safety, for the safety of all Israelis, and for the safety of all Palestinian civilians who have been the unwilling victims of extremist leaders. We deplore the Hamas leadership’s wanton violence which endangers the citizens of Gaza who are being used as human shields. Above all, we hope for the day when Palestinian leaders lay aside their hatred and arms, and reach out for peace with Israel.

Dems Repubs and Israel

 The TREND is VERY worrisome. DNC removed the word Jerusalem removed from the DNC platform as well as Hamas as terror, and Palestinians no right of return . The leadership knew it would hurt fundraising so they tried to put it back, and rammed it through despite an overwhelming majority loud chorus of boos from the delegates. DNC convention featured a large Muslim extremist sub convention. Many of the liberal churches have joined the Boycott, Divest, Sanction cause.

53% of Dems say they support Israel. 80+% Republicans. No matter how many glowing New York Times op-eds Haim Saban writes, no matter how many pro-Israel speeches Robert Wexler gives, no matter how many times they channel Pravda by hitting the same talking points about Barack Obama’s love for Israel, Democrats cannot ignore the elephant—er, over-sized donkey in the convention hall. Like it or not, the Democratic Party is becoming the home address of anti-Israel forces as well as Israel skeptics. And Democratic support is flagging, with a 20+-point gap between Republican support for Israel and Democratic support. I believe strongly that support for Israel should be a bipartisan bedrock—and with more than 70 percent of Americans supporting Israel that foundation remains strong but sadly it is becoming a partisan  issue

Gaza Hamas bombs

The situation in Israel has grown even more tense over the past 24 hours. 4.5 million Israelis are now threatened by Hamas rockets as the terrorist group launched a rocket that hit metropolitan Tel Aviv. More than 275 rockets have been fired by Hamas since yesterday morning – all of them targeting civilian populations, homes and communities.

This morning, Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Mark Kirk (R-IL) circulated a resolution to their colleagues that expressed the Senate’s “unwavering commitment to the security of the State of Israel,” and reiterates its call that Hamas must “end Gaza-linked rocket and missile attacks against Israel, recognize Israel’s right to exist, renounce violence, and agree to accept previous agreements between Israel and the Palestinians.”

By this evening, 64 Senators co-sponsored the bipartisan resolution and it passed the Senate by unanimous consent. We thank them for their support and the speed with which they delivered a powerful message that the United States stands with Israel.

Terror from Gaza tops 150 rockets

(JNS.org) Reacting to a barrage of more than 150 rockets fired at the Jewish state by Gaza terrorists, a senior Israeli minister told Israel Radio on Tuesday that “Sooner or later there will be a wide-ranging military offensive in Gaza.”

 

“There is no doubt it will come when the time is right,” the minister said. “It won’t be a limited, pin-point operation, but rather a deep military action against the terror infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.”

 

Israeli Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom told Army Radio that Israel “has no choice but to perform targeted assassinations against Hamas leaders, and then maybe even send ground forces into Gaza.”

 

“There are no election considerations here—only an interest in protecting the residents of the south,” Shalom said.

 

Palestinian terrorist organizations, including Hamas, are “suffering as a result of intense strikes [by the Israel Defense Forces] in Gaza,” Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Tuesday, the Associated Press reported. Israel “will decide how and when to act if necessary,” according to Barak.

Israel dragged into Syrian civil war for first time

(JNS.org) The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) tanks on Monday struck a Syrian artillery launcher following the landing of a stray mortar shell in Israeli territory for the second straight day, the Associated Press reproted.

 

For the first time since the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the IDF on Sunday had fired an artillery missile toward Syria in response to a Syrian mortar shell that exploded near an IDF post at Tel Hazeka in the eastern Golan Heights.

 

The missile, of the Tammuz type, was fired at the artillery battery of the Syrian army, which has been fighting rebel forces near the village of Bir al-Ajami in the northern Golan Heights. The missile exploded near the Syrian battery, and the IDF refused to say whether it was an intentional miss meant as a warning to the Syrians, according to Israel Hayom.

 

The IDF believes the Syrian mortar shell was launched in an exchange of fire between the Syrian army and rebels near the Israeli border. The shelling is the most recent in a series of incidents in recent weeks in which Syrian fire reached Israeli territory.

 

IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Yoav (Poly) Mordechai commented on the incident on Sunday, saying, “Amid the fighting between the Syrian army and rebels, a mortar shell was fired toward an IDF outpost. There were no casualties in the incident. In response, IDF forces fired warning shots into Syrian territory and a message was sent to the United Nations to warn Syrian forces to prevent additional fire from entering Israeli territory. The shooting at us is not coming from the rebels, rather from the Syrian army, so our message is directed at the Syrian army. We do not know what effect this message will have but we will follow it and see. This was a warning to the Syrian—more fire will be met with a real and determined response.”

Dangerous J Street and the election

Concerns arise over J Street’s influence on election

(JNS.org) A U.S. election that many political pundits hailed as “a return to the status quo” was a different story for many in the pro-Israel community, with concerns arising over the future of bipartisan support for Israel relating to the influence of the self-labeled “pro-Israel, pro-peace” group J Street. But others say J Street has overstated its influence.

 

J Street’s stated goal is “redefining what it means to be pro-Israel in America” by “changing the U.S. political dynamics around Israel.” However, critics contend that J Street’s efforts are ultimately anti-Israel, and several prominent Jewish leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have refused to meet with the group.

 

In the recent election, J Street’s political action committee—JStreetPAC—spent more than $1.8 million to endorse 71 candidates in the recent election. According to J Street, 70 of its endorsed candidates won.

 

J Street believes the election outcomes present an opportunity for American leadership to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict.

 

“JStreetPAC’s resounding success speaks to the deep hunger among American Jews and friends of Israel for a political voice that represents their belief that American leadership is vital to achieving a two-state solution and to securing Israel’s Jewish, democratic future,” said J Street Executive Director Jeremy Ben-Ami in a press release.

 

However, some feel that J Street is overstating its influence in many races that Democrats would have won regardless of the group’s support.

 

For instance, in the heavily contested Ohio Senate race between Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown and Republican Josh Mandel, most analysts attribute Mandel’s loss to a backlash against Mitt Romney’s position on the auto bailout—not the money poured in by groups like J Street against Mandel.

 

“It is clear that J Street’s role in this year’s election was basically irrelevant, and certainly far humbler than its own superlative: ‘astounding,’” wrote columnist Lori Lowenthal Marcus in The Jewish Press.

 

There are also concerns that J Street’s efforts to support more liberal candidates may eventually lead to an erosion of bipartisan support for Israel—an issue that groups like AIPAC have worked hard to cultivate and maintain.

 

J Street supporters like Peter Beinart often “depict Israel as the obstacle to peace and favor U.S. pressure to force Israeli concessions,” wrote Middle East expert Stephen J. Rosen in Foreign Policy.  

 

“As a result, these ideas are moving gradually from the far left to the center-left of the Democratic base. And as the older generation of Democratic stalwarts gradually passes from the scene and new Democrats to the left of their predecessors enter the House and Senate and slowly climb the ranks, there will be an evolution within the Democratic Party,” Rosen wrote.

Israel's Neuronix offers new Alzheimer's treatment

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Israel-based Neuronix, which has developed a non-invasive medical device to help to treat Alzheimer's disease, expects the system to be approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration in late 2014.

The device, which combines electromagnetic stimulation with computer-based cognitive training, is already approved for use in Europe, Israel and several Asian countries. In Singapore it is approved for clinical trial use and the application for registration of the product is still under evaluation.

"You stimulate the brain on a biological level as well as on a cognitive level," Neuronix CEO Eyal Baror told Reuters, saying this double approach created longer-lasting benefits.
