SYRIAN ARMY BRINGS IN IRANIAN SNIPERS, EMPTIES PALESTINIAN NEIGHBORHOOD
Iranian snipers have been deployed in Syria as part of an increasingly brutal crackdown on protests against the rule of President Bashar Assad, The Telegraph reported on Wednesday. The report confirms existing evidence that Damascus has turned to the Islamic Republic, its closest ally, for help in putting down the protests. On Tuesday, Syrian security forces continued their assault on the city of Latakia, leading as many as 10,000 residents of a Palestinian refugee neighborhood in the city to flee. Military operations in Latakia have left 36 people dead, and the U.N. estimates that more than 2,000 civilians in Syria have been killed since the beginning of the uprising against the Assad regime in mid-March. In light of the situation, the U.N. announced Wednesday that it was withdrawing all non-essential staff from Syria.
